Is it possible that the problem is not only with the employee, but that your lack of leadership skills are part of the problem? Sure, there are employees that don’t want to play ball, but the reason they are still there is because you have allowed them to operate that way. I know that you have to get your trucks out. The fact is that most of us were not trained to be leaders or managers. We needed employees, so we hired people. We assume that others will have the same outlook we have. They won’t. Most of your employees won’t care about the business, your customers and your equipment like you do. So, you are going to have to put a system in place that both encourages them to do so, and keeps them accountable to do so.

  • Reliable? To be at work on time? To have consistent performance?
  • Loyal?  They won’t leave for a 50 cent an hour raise? A positive attitude towards the company and  represents it well?
  • Hard/Smart working?  Someone who looks for ways to improve the way things are done?
  • Self-motivated?  Someone who looks for things to do and doesn’t need babysitting?
  • Honest? You can trust what they say and what they do?
  • “Team player”?  Someone who doesn’t work independently from the rest of the staff?
  • Enthusiastic? Someone who is a pleasure to around? Someone who spreads the company vision?

 

Wow, you don’t want much do you? Can you really find people like that? Before answering that question, let’s look at what they are looking for…

 

“What Are Your Employees Looking For?”

 

  • To be treated fairly  – More than anything else, they want to know that you are reasonable.
  • To be treated consistently  – If 5 minutes late is acceptable today, then it should be tomorrow! (in their mind).
  • To be communicated with frequently  – Constant, short and specific communication will prevent most problems in your business.
  • To know what’s in it for them  – It’s called “WIFFM” (What’s In It For Me?” Everyone wants to know what their return on investment will be.
  • To know when they do it right  – They need to hear this frequently and specifically. Praise the behavior you want repeated!
  • To know when they do it wrong  – YES, they really want to know this – and when it happens.  Don’t do the classic “build up” of small things over a long period and then “blow”!
  • To feel important  – And they are – they should be treated in a manner that shows this!
  • Time outside of work  – All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy! Be interested in outside activities and family – promote it!
  • Opportunity for growth  – Nobody likes a dead end!
  • To be able to support themselves/family  – Pay reasonable wages and reward performance.

This little meeting keeps them focused on the goals. Over the years, we have held weekly staff meetings when our company was in the development stage.
