In other words, aside from Spiritual matters, if one is able to implement more than the next person, assuming they are implementing something that will make a difference in their business and life, they will be more “successful” than the next person.
But the nagging question still remains... “Why do we do the things we do? And why do we NOT do the things we should?
If you love ice cream, but know that you shouldn’t eat a bowl of it before right before going to bed, why is it that we go right ahead and eat it anyway? Why can’t we resist the temptation?
The answer is found in our VALUE SYSTEMS. We all have value systems that have been developing since we were children. Over time, these values have taken root and we have developed habits. These habits are deep rooted to the point where you are not aware of them.
But there is an easy way to find out what you value. It has been said that you DO what you value and you value what you DO. So, to find out where your value systems are, you thoroughly inspect the things you do and the choices you make. It may take a lifetime to work through all of your value systems and this human struggle will remain to some extent until we move on from this life.
To begin to change, it is helpful to understand the process of changing habits. Notice the diagram below. You start out by being unaware of your value system. Something brings you to the “Awareness” stage. Perhaps you are frustrated because you are not getting more done in your business and life. Perhaps there is an annoying habit that you would like to break. Once you become aware, you begin to analyze how you have picked up that value system. There is usually some emotional need that has been unmet. In many cases, professional help is needed.
As we begin to think about why we have a certain habit or value, we will come to the critical decision of being willing to change. Have you ever met someone that said “By God, this is the way I am! This is the way I’ve always been and this is the way I’m gonna be!!”. Well, this is a person who will live with whatever disadvantage he or she may now live with.
If you do what you’ve always done…
If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always gotten. If you want to have something different than what you have now, you have to do something different than you are doing now. To do something different than you are doing now, you have to be something different than you are now. You have to be willing to change.
If you are not willing to change, you will never do anything differently. Therefore you won’t have anything significantly different than what you have now.
The next step is what is called “controlled attention”. Once you have chosen to change (and it is a choice), you begin to “control some attention” to the new habit you are wanting to form. During this period your values will be severely challenged. For example, let’s say that you become aware that washing your vans every day is a good value to have and you make the decision and control some attention to it.
The day that it starts raining, or you have too much to do, or other things begin to cry out for attention, you don’t get the vans washed.

If you stick with it, eventually you enter the “commitment” stage. The commitment stage is a good place to be but we aren’t all the way there yet. The commitment phase is when most often times the vans will be washed. The only time they wouldn’t get washed is when something that is really out of the ordinary happens.
The final stage is “Characterization”. It has been said that “character” is what you do when no one is looking. When you come to a place where you can’t sleep at night if your vans go out without being washed (just using that as an example) because it bothers you so much. It’s almost a SIN!
That’s how value systems work. And that’s how new habits are formed.

Suffice it to say that this is a big area that will have a huge impact in your business.
